Tooth Extractions
At Gorrell Smiles, we offer all the dental services you need to help you achieve and maintain a healthy smile. The goal is to do whatever we can to preserve the structure of your teeth, so removing a tooth is always a last resort procedure. Our dentists only recommend removing a tooth when they’ve exhausted all options for saving it, and it is the best step to protect your long-term oral health.
Why Do You Need to Extract My Tooth?
There are several cases where our dentists might recommend tooth extraction:
- A tooth is so severely decayed that a root canal won’t be sufficient to save it
- You had a dental injury that has left a tooth fractured below the gum line
- Wisdom teeth have not fully emerged and are impacted in the
- We need to extract a tooth in preparation for dental implant placement
- You’re getting dentures, and we need to extract one or more teeth
Whatever the reason, you can be confident that our dentists will explain exactly why we recommend extraction and how it will benefit you. We will answer all your questions thoroughly and use aids like digital x-rays and intraoral photos to help you visualize the problem and understand the need for treatment.
When it's time for your procedure, we offer two types of sedation to help you relax: nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. We'll pamper you with stress-reducing amenities like blankets, neck warmers, and lemon-scented towels to freshen up after your procedure. Our dental team has years of experience and knows what it takes to keep you as comfortable as possible.
Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?
When wisdom teeth – also referred to as third molars – come in at around age 20, they often don’t have enough room to emerge correctly. For this reason, wisdom teeth can come in at odd angles, or they may not come out at all because they’re stuck (impacted) in your gums.
Wisdom teeth tend to cause more problems than they solve; they’re difficult to clean properly because they’re so far back in your mouth, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. If a wisdom tooth is causing problems, we would recommend removing it.
At Gorrell Smiles, our team of skilled and experienced dentists can handle most tooth extractions here at our Mountain View, CA dental office. We use oral sedation that involves taking a sedative before your appointment to minimize your stress and discomfort.
But if the impacted tooth is partially or entirely encased by bone tissue (full bony impaction), we would refer you to a trained oral surgeon who can perform the procedure under IV sedation to ensure your comfort.
